Highway 3 Roots Review is Dave McCann, Leeroy Stagger and John Wort Hannam, three Southern Alberta songwriters who come together once a year to tour a Nashville Bluebird Café style of song swap.

DAVE McCANN is a Lethbridge based roots artist touring on the strength of his newest release Dixiebluebird. Recorded in Tennessee and produced by Nashville alt-icon Will Kimbrough (Todd Snider, Steve Earle, Rodney Crowell, Emmylou Harris, Mavis Staples), “Dixiebluebird” is Dave’s strongest work to date. If features a wealth of road and heart worn original material that lays a torch to the influence of Bruised Country Soul, Classic Southern Rock and Heartfelt Americana.

LEEROY STAGGER is a 28 year old singer songwriter from Lethbridge Alberta, His music hs been featured on Greys Anatomy, Heartland and Defying Gravity. His new record, “Little Victories” features Romi Mayes and Bob Egan (Blue Rodeo and Wilco).

JOHN WORT HANNAM For five years, Juno nominee John Wort Hannam was a teacher on the largest reserve in Canada – The Kainai Nation, part of the Blackfoot Tribe. In 1997 a friend played him a Loudon Wainwright III record and John was hooked by the music and stories. In 1998 he bought a guitar and in 2000 he quit teaching to pursue the dream of being a working musician. He resides in Fort Macleod, Alberta.

Ben Sures on Jan 21


The first time we hosted Ben Sures, he ended up shooting a pilot and inspiring the television show "Neighbor's Dog" by Plan 9 Films. The audience was very cheery that night, and Ben had the whole room dancing and singing. He's a great songwriter and showman and we can't wait for his return!

Singer/songwriter Ben Sures is the 2005 Winner in the folk category of the John Lennon songwriting contest and a winner in the 2006 International songwriting contest.

Ben is a songwriter extraordinaire and terrific guitar player who has played at music festivals across Canada. He has four critically acclaimed recordings to his credit and is also the current semi regular music guest on CBC Radio's national produced sketch comedy program 'The Irrelevant Show'.

Ben has worked as a commissioned songwriter for Canada's national broadcaster CBC radio in Winnipeg , Vancouver and Edmonton and done music for film and television including Sesame Street and as a guitar player with many great Canadian Artists including Rita Chiarelli, Angie Nussey, The Wyrd Sisters, Tim Williams, Emma Cook, Michelle Rumball (Grievious Angels), Paul Reddick and many more. He has performed as a support act for Ray Davies of The Kinks, The Preservation Hall band, The Good Lovelies, Lynn Miles and every other semi famous Canadian Folk hero. His soon to be released 'Gone to Bolivia' album was produced by Don Kerr and features Juno award winners The Good Lovelies, members of The Creaking Tree String Quartet, Michelle Rumball (Grievious Angels) and more.
